Get a Netbook Running Mac OS X Leopard for $350 from BestBuy - MSI Wind Sale!
It’s official, BestBuy has cut the price on the MSI Wind to $350!
Here are my favorite quotes:
“Best Buy is showing that it takes the mini notebook (aka netbook) category seriously, and it’s offering
the popular MSI Wind (10-inch display; 1.6GHz Atom processor) for a
very competitive price of $350 — about $100 less than other retailers.”
“I shouted “CRAP!” when reading this news on Liliputing: I just bought
a Wind last week for $480. Granted, my model sports a six-cell battery
(about 5 hours of juice) and Best Buy’s $350 model features a
three-cell (about 2 hours of life). Still, I could’ve gotten this one
and purchased a six-cell battery separately and I still would’ve saved
a big chunk.”
Run out and get yours now!
Now there is a new netbook running Apple OS X. Check out the Akoya from Medion running Apple OS X! I can’t wait to get one and hack it myself.
Anyone else out there trying to do this now? Let us know how it comes out! Here are the photos from wired magazine.

Here are the steps to set it up:
Installing off USB flash or external HD is very easy.
You need only a real mac or a hackintosh running tiger or leopard
step 1: Mount the MSIWindOSX.iso (double click on it)
step 2: plug in the usb drive or flash drive so it mounts
step 3: Go into Disk utility - click Restore
step 4: drag the mounted iso volume to the ‘ SOURCE ‘ section
step 5: drag the usb drive or flash drive to the ‘ Destination ‘ section
step 6: check ‘ erase destination ‘ click ok
Restore
to USB will take about 10 minutes or so.. go get a coffee.. check your
email, update your facebook status - what have youstep 7: Download Chameleon 1.0.6 [needed to make the USB drive bootable]
step
8: Double click the chameleon dmg to mount it, run through its prompts
and install it to your flash / usb key - this makes it bootable.step 9: Plug Flash / USB key into msi wind, boot from it (either change in bios or hit f11 for boot menu) - install as normal.
Thats all.
Here is the second article on setting up and hacking a Netbook. Here are the interesting parts of the article:
“Netbook modding is becoming so popular, Winter has launched a netbook-modding business: Winter Computer Solutions, which mods customers’ netbooks with GPS, Bluetooth, DVD readers or HDTV tuners.”
“Another netbook modding nut goes by the handle “JKK.” He hosts a web site dedicated to
tutorials
on netbook modding, and he says hacking mini notes is so trendy because
it’s generally very easy — even for non-engineers. JKK Mobile’s most
popular hack was installing a stylus-controlled touchscreen on an Asus
EEE PC, which JKK said was simple enough to do with a $50 kit from a Chinese manufacturer.
“
Here is another example of a hacked netbook running Mac OS X Leopard and the specs are impressive:
2 gigs of RAM, as well as a third-party Wi-Fi
card for Apple’s Airport connection.
And all it took was Amazon and one weekend to have it running.
Here is my favorite quote:
“Third, I’m a cafe rat, and lugging around my MacBook Pro avec its bulky power brick began to tire me. And I thought, why not leave my MacBook Pro in the office and reserve a small, lightweight netbook at home for casual use and cafe squatting? Deviates from my philosophy of minimalism, I know — but the idea was appealing to me. And for $300 to $600 (about as much as people shovel up for smartphones nowadays), if this turned out to be a mistake, it wouldn’t be a very expensive one.”
The
mysterious visitors could be a new, in-development Apple product or it
could be a netbook hacked to run OS X - such as this Gigabyte M912X or
this MSI Wind - and browsing using Safari on a smaller display. …
“An unnamed search engine has reported traffic from a product purporting to be Apple-made but with a screen-size larger than that of the iPhone but smaller than that of MacBooks. The disclosure was made to John Markoff of the NYT, on the understanding that their identity be protected, and instantly the speculation began that Apple is testing its own netbook or tablet.”
Do you think Apple is seeing what is going on with the other Netbooks and is now trying to catch-up to the party? Who knows …
